Top 2010 Health Advances

Integrative Medicine

As the year begins, here are the biggest medical advances being achieved at the Midway Center utilizing integrative approaches. First, we now recognize that disorders are more appropriately labeled by their varying underlying multifaceted etiologies, rather than ‘depression’, the appropriate diagnosis may be mercury toxicity, toxic work or home environment, or deficiency of vitamin B12, vitamin D, folate, thyroid, zinc, omega-3 fats or hormones.  If these are causes of a depressed mood, how often is an antidepressant going to fix them?

Prognosis for serious brain disorders continues to improve. Some reversal, occasionally dramatic, is usually seen with Parkinson’s, early Alzheimer’s dementia, ADHD, multiple sclerosis, and most other brain impairments.  Keys to improving autism are brain detoxification, digestive healing, elimination of food sensitivities and correcting nutrient imbalances. With mood, panic, and other psychological variances, quick responses using natural approaches are usually obtained.

Integrative cancer protocols are ever evolving. Strategies for chemotherapy success and tolerability using integrative support continue to improve. We can consult with the best integrative oncologist nationally and get input from the best American botanical cancer expert. Risk for hormone-related cancer can be better assessed.

IgG food hypersensitivity evaluation is transforming the lives of evermore patients with ‘cures’ including ADHD, suicidal depression, severe headaches, fibromyalgia, cognitive impairment, irritable bowel, rashes, and joint aches. In Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis with digestive assessment and intervention, medication can be minimized or eliminated.  Gallbladder dysfunction is usually reversible in our experience.

Reversal of carotid artery disease has been achieved with nutritional approaches.  Evaluation of cardiovascular disease can include 15-20 blood markers, with effective interventions.  In fact we now offer a 250-test panel, comprehensive micronutrient analysis, organic acid and heavy metal testing. Several important genetic polymorphisms can be successfully circumvented.

Other strides have been made.  Kidney failure can sometimes be partially reversed. Safe strategies for improving platelets and white cell count have produced good outcomes. New insights into the etiology of pain are leading to improvement in most with inexpensive interventions. Responses in fibromyalgia are improving with resolution in some. Chronic fatigue usually responds nicely. Subclinical hypothyroidism is generally stabilized.  Increasingly, menopausal hormone imbalance is successfully managed without the use of hormones. Most psychiatric disorders are being recognized as treatable genetic, nutritional, micronutrient, environmental, toxic, hormonal, and autoimmune in etiology - see central Kentuckian Jeannie Wolfson’s new amazing book It’s Not Mental.

While we don’t always succeed, we tackle problems that others have been unable to fix. A comprehensive approach with extensive testing and a detailed treatment plan, in individuals that are disciplined and resourceful, improves the odds. Some results just five years ago would not have seemed possible. Our staff has expanded to nine, including a highly knowledgeable digestive-nutritional consultant and an integrative ‘mind-body’ PhD nurse.
