Children are struggling. The incidence of brain disorders and use of powerful brain-altering drugs is climbing rapidly. However, children’s brains are amazingly resilient and when the root causes of their many problems are addressed, improvement may be slight or it can be miraculous.
Recently, a child with major brain issues and inability to speak visited our office. He screamed throughout the visit and was very resistant to evaluation. After a long discussion about nutrition and blood work, eight supplements were initiated. As we see in about every child from ADHD to autism, severe IgG food hypersensitivity was present, and as usual included milk products and gluten (wheat, rye, barley). On repeat assessment six weeks later, a happy, friendly young boy appeared. He cuddled one of the staff members, partly cooperated with the exam and vocalized, trying to speak. Teachers were very surprised by progress and the parents, who had been very diligent about nutrition, were so pleased that they expanded his program.
Except for severe genetic issues, the problems with children’s brains are primarily nutrition, deficiencies, toxins, inflammation, hormonal balance, intestinal health and autoimmune problems, especially food sensitivities. Special nutritional instruction is instrumental. Levels of vitamins and minerals can be assessed with blood work with emphasis on iron, vitamins D, A, E, zinc, and B vitamins; intracellular micronutrient analysis provides optimal assessment. Most children are deficient in magnesium, zinc, B vitamins, and vitamin D; optimal dosing and timing needs emphasis. New research has just demonstrated that correcting iron and zinc deficiency improved memory. Vitamin D has resolved autism.
IgG food hypersensitivity testing is invaluable in our experience, and a result of intestinal inflammation that we feel is nearly always present; oral probiotic (friendly bacteria) is essential. Both boys and girls tend to have excess estrogenic influence, associated with depletion in dopamine. Heavy metal toxins lead, arsenic and mercury can be assessed and addressed. Mitochondrial dysfunction can respond to Coenzyme Q10 and carnitine. A glutathione level sheds light on the toxin status. Thyroid stimulating hormones (TSH), free T3 and free T4, are recommended due to the central role of the thyroid in brain health.
It is my belief that the brains of our children are so delicate that it is too risky to give them any brain-modifying drug; dealing with the root causes will make it rarely an issue. Symptoms that we have seen respond include cognitive abilities, anxiety, depression, hyperactivity, irritability, focus and reading ability. An ADHD child responded so well to supplements that teachers took up a collection so that she could maintain them. A child with reading difficulties was reading Harry Potter cover to cover within a year of intervention. The mother of an Asperger’s child was told that her daughter would never be normal, when in fact, with appropriate support, it appears that she will be.
